LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A man shot and killed by another man with a rifle during an argument on a street in South Los Angeles was a prominent gang member, police said today. The shooting, which is being investigated as gang-related, occurred about 11:25 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Broadway and Century Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim — identified by the coroner’s office as Ladell Edward Rowles, 50, of Los Angeles — died at the scene, Los Angeles police Lt. David Rosenthal said. Rowles was a prominent member of the Main Street Mafia Crips, said Sgt. James Linder of the LAPD’s Southeast Station. “The suspect was arguing with another man and during the argument he shot the second man with a rifle,” Rosenthal said. “The shooting took place at close quarters and the suspect fled the scene.” Police were searching for a white SUV that may have been used by the shooter to escape, a videographer reported from the scene. Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to call the LAPD’s Southeast station at (213) 972-7828. All tips can be made anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
